Our inaugural API Day complete with a Dragon’s Den-styled Hackathon

At our API Day in Singapore earlier this year, senior leaders from the bank, including Group CIO Michael Gorriz, SC Ventures Global Head Alex Manson, and industry leaders from BNY Mellon, Go-Jek and Prudential shared valuable insights and discussed the importance of APIs as we reimagined a new digital era.

Open banking and APIs have already started to transform banking, and further disruptions are on the cards. In the next 3-5 years, we will likely see a massive integration of service providers’ platforms with banks leading the charge. Open API-led transformations will allow banks to co-create systems with third-parties and redefine financial services and products. In fact, that was the purpose of our API day—to promote awareness of our initiatives in this space and also to provide an opportunity for our tech teams across the bank to come together and collaborate

And there’s no better way to accelerate collaboration than through a hackathon. We challenged participants to develop an app using our APIs that will either benefit our customers or improve our internal processes. The participating teams had to present their ideas in a set similar to reality TV show Dragon's Den. The short-listed teams were then assigned a Technology/Business partner who provided mentorship to the teams while helping them crystallise their ideas for the final presentation. The winning team is currently working with SC Ventures, the bank’s innovation unit, to bring their new app to life.

And what is an API Day without a showcase of our very own APIs? Various technology teams across the businesses and technology teams set up booths and gave the conference participants a first-hand experience on the different types of APIs we have in the Bank.

It was indeed a power code-packed day!
